Immigration rules and police registration

Under the now-suspended immigration rules you had to register with the police if you were:

  • Age 16 or over and
  • A relevant foreign national

A relevant foreign national was someone who:

  • Was a national or citizen of a country included in Appendix 2 to the immigration rules
  • A stateless person
  • A person who had a non-national travel document

Why has the police registration scheme been stopped?

The Home Office says the police registration scheme has been stopped because the Home Office is now able to get the information digitally that was previously provided by foreign nationals when registering with the police. Therefore, the scheme is no longer justified. The suspension of the scheme is welcomed as it was an administrative burden to the police and an extra hurdle for the foreign nationals who were subject to the scheme.

Existing visa holders and police registration

If you are an existing visa holder and you were caught under the police registration scheme rules, you no longer have to comply with them. However, you will not get a new biometric residence permit or BRP.

Reporting to the Home Office

Although visa holders are no longer subject to police registration, you do still need to comply with reporting duties to the Home Office. For example, reporting to the Home Office about a change of home address or, if you are in the UK on a spouse visa or partner visa, reporting if your relationship with your sponsor has come to an end and you are separating.

Sponsor licence reporting and work visas

Although visa holders are no longer subject to police registration, if you are in the UK on a sponsored work visa, your sponsoring employer will still need to comply with their Home Office imposed reporting and recording duties. For example, reporting on a change of address or an unauthorised absence, or termination of employment.
